The county Durham town of Egglestone, near Staindrop, held its own race meeting on Friday 31st October 1845 with entries made at the Queen’s Head Inn at Staindrop the day before. The course was laid out in fields across good hunting ground on the edge of the town and the card opened with the Egglestone Steeplechase which was won cleverly by Father Mathew. The Tally-Ho Chase over 3 miles saw Mr Cookson’s Snipe beat Clementina and Bachelor, while the Scurry Stakes over a mile was won by Maid of Auckland for Mr Robson, getting the better of Is it Me That’s Wanted. There is no further record of racing taking place in the town. |
